Following the month long protests, it has become quite clear who the future of Bangladesh relies on. It is not the army, the police, or the politicians. It was the students who made this victory possible. All over Bangladesh today, following the celebrations, the countless deaths and the havoc created in the country has put everything on hold. We have to remember, religious violence and sabotage is NOT the way and students are making sure of it. At the moment, temples are being burnt down and people are being shot down; but who is to blame?
One thing is for sure, it is absolutely not the students. As I was celebrating all around Chittagong today, students had created barrier's surrounding the flyover construction, murals of Sheikh Mujib, etc. To whoever is wreaking havoc, you are only putting a stain on the history and legacy of this country. You are destroying the progress we have all fought for and died for this past month. Are you doing anything other than creating mass panic in an already chaotic time?
I have a lot of hopes for my country. A country that has been built by students from the start. Not just from 1971, but from 1952. Are we to let that all go to waste? Did the martyrs of ‘52, ‘71, ‘24 lay their lives on the line for us to turn against each other? We have succeeded today due to unity, which is what we need to bring this country up again from the depths. We have to stick together, otherwise are we any different from the regime we just ended? But to do so, we CANNOT destroy havens, decapitate people, and turn against one another through violence. It is YOUR duty to preserve the peace in this country, because you are the past, you are the present, and you are the future. Tomorrow we will live together and the thoughts of communal violence will be something that will be a term that is extinct to our future generations.
It is not the end, but the start for a new Bangladesh.
